Academic Dress

Academic dress for the University consists of a black cloth academic gown, black mortar board and a black hood lined with silk. The colour of the hood lining distinguishes the level of award.

• Diploma (3-years) - Black hood with turquoise blue lining
• Degree of Bachelor (3 and 3.5 years) - Black hood with red lining
• Degree of Bachelor (4 years) - Black hood with maroon lining
• Degree of Bachelor (5 and 6 years) - Black hood with pale grey lining
• Graduate Certificate or Diploma - Black hood with gold lining
• Degree of Master - Royal Blue hood with horizon lining
• Doctor of Philosophy - Royal Blue gown with gold facings, a black bonnet and a royal blue hood with horizon lining
• Doctor of the University -  Royal Blue gown with gold facings, a black bonnet and a royal blue hood with gold lining

Candidates who are being awarded a 'double' degree may only wear the hood lining colour for one of the single degrees being awarded.

If you are graduating from a Bachelor degree, it is customary to wear the tassel on the left hand side. If you have graduated previously and are graduating from a postgraduate degree, you can wear your tassel on the right hand side.

Hire Academic Dress

All students wishing to hire academic gowns for graduation must arrange via the Shop UC online store or hire on the day of graduation at least one hour prior to their ceremony. Please note that only cash payments will be a accepted on the day.

Pick Up of Academic Dress

Academic dress is to be picked up from the Theatre Foyer at Parliament House, 60 minutes prior to the ceremony which you are graduating in.  

If you have arranged hire online, you MUST bring your invoice with you to pick up your academic dress.  

Gown Return

Gowns must be returned to the "Returns" desk in the Theatre Foyer within two hours of the conclusion of the ceremony, together with the hiring slip.

Failure to return your gown within this time may result in nil refund of your gown hire deposit.

Failure to return your gown within ten working days of the ceremony will result in an invoice being issued to you for the cost of a replacement gown.

Refund of Deposit

If you hire your graduation regalia online, your deposit will be returned via the same method in which you paid your hire. Please note it may take up to ten days for your hire refund to be returned to your bank account.

If you hire your regailia at Parliamnet House, your deposit of $100.00 will be refunded in cash when you return your hire to the hire desk after the ceremony.
